My name is Becca Atherton and I am 22 years old. When I was born the doctors discovered that was born with Tetralogy of Fallot, Pulmonary Atresia and Pulmonary Hypertension. I've had over 25 heart catherizations, 4 open heart surgeries, had a pacemaker/defibrillator placement and survived having the staph infection MRSA. I currently take 45 pills a day, sleep with oxygen at night (and when traveling above 3,000 feet), follow a strict low-salt and no caffeine diet.
This past summer I traveled to Pittsburgh to get evaluated for a heart-lung transplant at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. I also see a pediatric cardiologist who specializes in Pulmonary Hypertension up at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital inside of Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto, California. While my quality of life is good, I will eventually need a heart-lung transplant and will have to move from my home in Phoenix, Arizona to Pittsburgh and live there while I wait for the transplant and for some time afterwards.
It's been a bumpy ride and I know there are going to be some rough spots in the future - but it's all worth it and I appreciate all of the support and love from my readers.
